Do Not Think

For this comic I tried something different. Let's see if you can notice what it is...

So... don't scroll down. But first take a look, decide for yourself what you think is different and then scroll down to see if you were right πŸ™‚

Scroll some further...

Have you picked something yet?

Ok... so: it's the lettering.

A few days ago a couple of my fellow comic creators started a discussion on Twitter about hand lettering your comic. I tried that for 2 or 3 comics and then went back to using a font, for the sake ofΒ clarity and readability. But always felt sorry that I couldn't make the hand lettering work.

So a few days ago, Jeff CouturierΒ of Horde of Neurons, dropped a few links about how to make hand lettering work. So I tried it this time, but I kinda cheated a little (on purpose). I decided I would mix all the benefits of the digital era together with hand lettering. So first I wrote all the texts on the computer, positioned them and made everything flow right. And after coloring and tweaking the text some more, I felt it was right... so then I kinda used those texts as a guide to hand letter the texts myself. So you could call it traced, but I really like the effect. It has a personal touch, but it's still readable and almost looks the same - but it has some minor variations which the hand lettering gives.

It looks great, Skar! I still hand letter my comic. Love the gang in panel four. Funny!

You know, when they first started falling, I was thinking of the scene from another Keanu movie, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, when they are falling all the way down to hell. They start off screaming, then get bored and play 20 questions.

Never seen the movie, but that could work in the Mojo universe as well πŸ™‚
I could see the guys playing some games like I Spy πŸ˜›

Darn, Mojo looks cool in panel four. What’s Merv so upset about, that he didn’t get to be the one? πŸ™‚

Yeah, Mojo is the best looking dude in the Mojo-Matrix – I must agree on that πŸ™‚
I think Merv just isn’t happy they ended up in the Matrix, without consulting each other.

Thank you, glad you like it ^^
I tried to draw the letters myself, but they differ too much from the font I’m using. So I decided to ‘cheat’ and my goal is that in time I will getting used to drawing the letters and eventually it’s just my own handwriting… but we’ll see.

Never send a human, a cat, and a penguin to do a machine’s job. Lol. Great job on the lettering, skar!

Thanks mate. I’m also very pleased with how the lettering worked out. It’s not completely different, but it has a little more personality in it…
